EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

 

Organization

The Communities In Schools (CIS) mission is to champion the connection of community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. Nationwide, there are nearly 200 local CIS affiliates serving 3,250 schools sites and almost one million students in 27 states and the District of Columbia.

 

CIS believes that every child needs and deserves these “Five Basics”:

Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors of CISSWPA, the Executive Director is responsible for establishing the organization’s short-, medium- and long-term goals and objectives, developing partnerships and procedures for accomplishing those goals and objectives throughout the CISSWPA service area; for ensuring that CISSWPA has financial resources that sustain and allow for the deepening of its impact; for developing and implementing local and regional strategies; and for actively participating in Communities In Schools’ state network initiatives. Specific responsibilities include:

 

Fundraising and Partnerships

Develop a fundraising strategy and lead implementation;

Establish strong relationships with individual, corporate and foundation donors; develop new funding sources.

Raise CISSWPA’s profile by establishing and maintaining close relationships with local legislators and their staffs, appropriate partner agencies, county and local government, and media outlets to address issues affecting youth and their families.

Create partnerships with organizations throughout Southwestern PA on behalf of youth and their families.

Actively participate in the network of CIS executive directors across PA.

 

Strategic Leadership

Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with each member of the CISSWPA Board of Directors.

 

Together with the Board of Directors, create and implement a strategic board development plan.

 

Develop, present and implement strategic and operational plans; lead all fiscal and budgeting activities, as well as measurement against stated plans.

Coordinate and supervise CISSWPA operations, developing and maintaining close working relationships with the CIS state staff as well as with the others in the CIS state network.

Select, mentor, supervise and evaluate statewide management and program staff.

 

Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with at least 10 years overall professional experience, including a minimum of five years in public administration, education, social services or a related field.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated management and fiscal responsibility for a complex, multi-site public service organization that includes rural and urban communities.

Demonstrated commitment to improving the life opportunities of disadvantaged youth; sensitivity to the needs of diverse racial and ethnic populations.

Team player with a commitment to professional development for affiliate staff.

Superior level of interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

Strong relationship-builder with a proven ability to proactively adapt when establishing partnerships and securing significant resources from foundations, corporations, individuals, events and public entities.

Organized, with experience in leading strategic and operational planning and budgeting.

Ability to travel throughout the region and to state meetings on a regular basis.
